Brand development
Brand development is the work before the design: deciding what the business stands for, who it is for, what it promises and how it differs from the three companies quoting against it. Get that wrong and the identity is decoration on an unclear proposition.
It runs as a short, structured piece of work. Interviews with your people and, where possible, your customers. A look at what your competitors claim, which is usually more revealing about the gaps than about them. Then a positioning that can be defended, written plainly enough to be argued with.
The output is a proposition, an audience definition, the messages that support them and a tone of voice. It is written to be used by whoever writes your next tender, advertisement or job listing, not to sit in a folder.
If your team would give three different answers to what the business is for, that is the problem worth solving first. Describe where you are and you will get a suggestion on where to start.
