Magazine design and layout
A magazine is a system rather than a set of pages. It needs a grid that survives contact with real articles, a typographic hierarchy readers can follow without thinking, and a production process that gets an issue out on time every time.
What magazine design involves
The template does the work
The grid, the type scale, the standing furniture and the section styles are designed, then built as master pages and paragraph styles. Once that exists, laying out an issue is assembly rather than invention, and it can be handed to your own team to run in house.
Getting each issue out
Copy and images are taken as they arrive, fitted and edited for length, image sourcing and retouching handled where needed, and press ready artwork supplied to your printer specification. Deadlines in publishing are real and the work runs to them.
