Digital advertising

Digital advertising covers search, shopping, display, video, paid social and retargeting. They do different jobs: some capture demand that already exists, others create it. Spending on the wrong one is the most common reason a budget looks like it is failing, and it is usually diagnosed in an afternoon.

Most businesses only need two or three of these channels. The mix is planned around what you sell and how people decide to buy it, then the channels that earn their place are run and the rest are stopped.

The work

What digital advertising involves

Matching the channel to the decision

People searching for a plumber and people scrolling past a furniture brand are at different points and need different advertising. Search captures demand that already exists; social and display create it. The mix is set by how your customers decide to buy, not by which platform is newest or which one a competitor is using.

Creative does more work than targeting

On every platform that matters, the creative now decides performance more than the audience settings do. Native creative is produced for each placement rather than resizing one artwork, and enough variants are tested to learn something rather than to confirm a preference.

Structure, negatives and the boring maintenance

Accounts drift. Search terms creep in that never convert, ad sets fragment until none of them gather enough data, and creative fatigues quietly. The weekly work of pruning and refreshing is what separates a managed account from a running one.

Measuring what actually happened

Every platform will claim the same conversion if you let it. Tracking is set up once, across channels, so you can see what each contributed rather than adding up three reports that all count the same sale.

Measured against what it returned

Reporting covers cost per enquiry and what those enquiries were worth, not impressions. You keep ownership of every advertising account, so nothing in the reporting is something you cannot check yourself.

Landing where the search is answered

A large share of poor advertising performance is a landing page problem. You will be told when the money would be better spent fixing the page than buying more traffic for it.

Questions

Common questions

How much do we need to spend?

Enough on one channel to learn something rather than a little on four. Proving one works comes before widening.

Which channel should we start with?

Usually search, because it captures people already looking. If nobody is searching for what you sell, that answer changes.

How quickly can we start?

Search and social campaigns can be live within a week or two. Producing creative for display and video takes longer.

Do you handle the creative as well?

Yes. The ads are designed and the copy written in the same place, which matters more than the targeting on most platforms.

What if it does not work?

You will be told. Some products are better served by fixing the offer or the landing page than by buying more traffic for them.

How do you know which channel is working?

Tracking is set up on your site before any budget is spent, so every channel is judged on the same enquiries and sales rather than on the figures its own dashboard reports.
